Advanced lighting workshop

Advanced lighting workshop

The first bit of important advice we were told, was it is so important to be careful around lights with cables and heat because it is very easy to trip over cables and knock lights over. This could also really damage the lights and they could even set fire to things. Moreover, when turning on a bright light, it's important that you call out to everyone that your'e going to,, by saying 'eyes down' and 'sparking' incase they were looking at the light.

Equipment:

The Red Head light: this is used for the most simple, lighting. It gives very sharp shadows. You can help with these by diffusing the light using 'trace'. The light breaks up when it hits it and is consequently a bit softer

The Blonde: used as a main light, similar to red head lights but more powerful

Soft Box: A soft box is a lighting devise that diffuses the light to make it softer

Fluorescent: Long florescent tube lights in different colours. We can change the colour by placing the lights at different distanced from each other.

What we learnt:

-The Director of Photography (previously known as lighting camera man) works for the director. Their job is to make the nicest possible pictures for the directors to see and judge the overall look and how it went. It's all about the interplay between the camera and lighting.

-We adjust the lights for the camera and not the camera for the lights

3 point lighting

-3 point lighting is very common, and is the standard lighting set up, also used for TV

-The main light is the Key light. placed in front of what is being lit.

-The fill light removes some of the extra shadows. It is a bit further away so it removes some of the shadows

-The back light helps separate the person from the background

-the blonde light behind gives an angelic look

Tips

-polystyrene in front, bounces soft light onto her face

-black flats on both sides of the persons face will shrink their face more

-a frame with stretched gel over it, gives light from the bottom to the top. It takes away the big shadow.

-(then just adjust the exposure so it's less blurry)

- a matte box is a device placed on the end of a lens to block the sun or other light source in order to prevent glare and lens flare

-a dress light or practical light is a light source that appears in the scene itself: e.g a lamp, TV or candles

-adjusting the aperture wide lets the light into the camera
