Timeline

 Timeline

This is our plan timeline that we made so we can start to figure out how our song will work with our sets, and what sort of shots we are going to use, and how we will position the band etc...

Then I created an infographic that was more easier to read and i could edit any finish touches we wanted to add to the timeline.

Contacting our musician

Contacting our musician

Four our timeline, we needed to make sure that we knew what the lyrics were so we could choose our shots around it, and we would also need to lyrics for when we start rehearsing. So i messaged Terrence on Instagram Direct Message, and asked him for the lyrics and the structure of the song. I also asked him for his email, so we could send him the copyright agreement email.

Advanced Camera Workshop

Advanced Camera Workshop

In todays lesson, we went down to the studio where Matt gave us our first advanced camera workshop of this year.

Re-cap:

-We used a Black Magic camera
-When setting up the tri-pod, we start from the bottom and work our way up. This way it will be level, won't fall down, and will be easier to adjust later on

White balance controls how colours are captured in different lighting, for example, there is a more blue light outside in natural light, and a more yellow lighting from indoor, man made light.

-White balance helps to alter how the colour will look, including during different weather like overcast, or very sunny.

Exposure is the amount of light that reachers the camera sensor

Shutter speed/angle:

-Allows the camera to see movement in the right kind of way
-Eliminates blur and changes how quick the motion looks
- The higher the number of the shutter speed, from 360-180, the smoother and softer it looks: this would be good for making scenes look romantic and dream like, more intimate
-also great for a vintage effect, like for our 60s music video
-And the lower the number: around 180-90, the more the camera can capture. This would be better for quick movement like dancing or drumming.

Prime lens:
-Music videos are mostly shot with Prime lenses:
-they are measured in millimetres
-they are all individual lenses and our used for detail
-they each have one job, so the quality is extremely good, where as with zoom, it cant get as high quality, and is used for more general use

There are many different lenses, that have different jobs and effects. Heres why you might use each one...

-18, 21 and 25mm is great for a wide shot (or establishing shot)
-around 50 is the more standard lens, filming multiple people reasonable far away/close, for example.
-85mm upwards is used as a 'beauty filter'. It rounds off faces creating a softer look and camera work

There are also a few rules that we need to think about:

-Firstly, its important to light for what the camera sees, rather than what we see. The camera has a very different way of capturing images than our own eyes, so for example we need to alter the white balance frequency to make sure the colours are captured correctly. Even if it looks right to us, it will probably look different on the camera.
-Adding to this, we need to remember to only use the TV monitor
for framing
(looking at how everything and everyone is positioned and placed), and to otherwise always look in the through the lens, so we can have a more accurate perspective to how everything will look.
-We also need to pay attention to the importance of composition and positioning: The way you position your cast can potentially make or break the video
-placing everyone in a line in the middle of the set is incredibly dull and has been done to death
-experimenting with distances, levels and angles will make a big difference
-making people face different ways, pose at different heights, and be different distances to the camera will also help to keep the scene interesting unique

What we need for our cast

What we need for our cast

We will need four teenage boys for the band:
-a lead guitarist
-a rhythm guitarist
-a bass player
-and a drummer
-preferably brunette, with long/shaggy hair
-skinny, quite tall, white
-they need to be able to play their instruments

-It will be easiest for us as to cast boys aged 16-19 from our school, but we need boys that look mature but are also youthful/fresh faced

We will also need four girl dancers
-Blonde/light coloured hair
-medium length hair
-white, skinny
-very happy/peppy/excitable

-These girls will obviously have to be comfortable dancing, and be very excitable, as the Go-Go dancers of the 60s were famous for their fast dance moves and high energy

Feedback for treatment

 Feedback for treatment

This is the feedback we recieved as a group:...

Things to develop:

-The patterns and art we had as ideas for our back drop was too busy and too much going on, so we need to decide on a block colour background

-Because of space in the studio, we will also need less dancers in the first scene, so we need to plan how many there will be and how we will arrange them

-we need to make our sets more clear (as in what happens in each scene)

(this is a drawing Chloe did so we can visualise and plan out the set)

-Luke also suggested an idea of putting Top Of The Pops style TV's and cameras in front of the stage

-make sure the quality of the light show is in HD, so it will still look good when its big and stretched out

Good elements:

-the general idea; they thought the 60s idea is different and will look very cool if done well

-the dancers and their costumes

-the liquid light show we will be projecting

-the costumes

-the platforms that the dancers will be on

Targets:

Gabi will: clarify sets and background colour

Connie will: find the video of the liquid lights and develop Luke's idea about the TV's on set

Chloe: see how the dancers will fit around the band

My Targets:

The liquid light show:

-I found a youtube channel that has very long and good quality liquid light shows that we can project onto our cast.

Luke also wanted us to think about and discuss wether we would be okay with a shadow being behind the musician/dancer while the lights our projecting onto them, as this is what would probably happen. We all agreed that we don't think it would be a problem at all, and also wont take away from the effect.

Target 2:

The Tv's and cameras idea

-After discussing Lukes idea, we thought it would be really cool to start the video in black and white, filming a retro television set.
-We see the band walking onto the set, to their positions, its behind the scenes and they countdown to start the show
-then the camera goes into the tv and is now in colour and we are watching the performance

-this way, we wouldn't have to have cameras there the whole time because obviously there isn't a lot of space in the studio

-The behind the scenes part would add an extra element to the video too. However, we might not have the budget or the space to rent a 60s or 60s looking camera for our video

Getting into our groups

Getting into our groups

Today, Mike put us into our groups, and although we only have three, im really happy with who's in my group because I loved their ideas and I feel like we will get on really well.

The first thing we did was made a WhatsApp group, so we could have a chat to contact each other about meeting up to work together, and a place for updates.

It's already been useful to quickly answer questions when we're all working on the project out of school.

Which idea did we decide on?

After discussing what we liked about each of our pitches, we decided to go with my 60s idea, which I'm so excited about.

However, we still needed one more aspect for my idea that needed to be developed.
As we loved the silhouettes in Gabi and Chloe's videos we thought it would be great to do one more set, with the girls behind different coloured screens, dancing. We will develop this idea more later on, when we can all meet up again to go through the details, but we now have all the basics sorted out including:
-how many we need in the cast (8)
-what sets we need (three different ones)
-what costumes we need (I have already sorted out a Pintrest board of ideas)

Over the next few days we will start to create our visual treatment to present to the another teacher, Luke:

We used google slides so we could all edit the presentation at the same time

Costumes

Costumes

Now that we've been put into groups, we decided that we were going to go with my 60s idea, but then use Chloe and Gabi's ideas of silhouettes of girls for the third part that I was missing. We have to present a treatment on Wednesday so I'm going to make a post about our first ideas for costumes.

The band:

For our four piece boy band, I wanted to chose outfits that...
-work well with the genre
-match together
-represent the 60s
-will be relatively easy to find

The style: mid to late 60s, Mod and Psychedelic influences

Jackets: Bright block coloured fitted blazers
with mock neck sweaters, turtle necks or button up shirts

Crushed Velvet was also a very popular material:

or bright coloured suede trucker jackets: earth tones

Trousers: Stripes, denim, velvet, colourful or white
mostly tight fitting and straight legged

For one scene, all the boys will be in different coloured 'John Lennon' circle lenses

The dancers:

-There will be four dancers, and ideally they will be in the same outfits or at least matching with perhaps different colours. Again they need to:
-work well with the genre
-match together
-represent the 60s
-will be relatively easy to find

The style: mid to late 60s, Mod and Psychedelic influences

-Go-Go dancers often wore mod style mini dresses or matching sets with fringe
-Often colourful but black and white was also very popular

Makeup would be Twiggy/Jean Shrimpton inspired as it was the most popular

And hairstyles would be a beehive (back combed), Bubble flips or curls at the end, preferably a fringe
