Why do Digipaks still exist?
What is the purpose of a Digipak?
A Digipak is the packaging of a CD, with an internal plastic holder for the disc. The front, back and inside have designs/artwork on them. This could be photos of the band or artist or drawings.
The artwork will be very specific to the band/artist and follow the conventions of the genre the musicians are associated with. Colour scheme, fonts, drawings, lighting and positioning of the artist all contribute to the design.
For example, the 'Rock and roll over' album by Kiss, follows many rock conventions:
This contrasts strongly to Beyoncés album 'dangerously in love'. We can tell the album is pop, because the cover is a photo of Beyoncé posing seductively, she is wearing a shiny top and silver earrings, showing a lot of skin, with her hair blowing back. The font is white and glows. It's very pretty and angelic.
These details help the bands target audience to be attracted to the album and purchase it.
What information is included?
There is a lot of information on the digipak, on both sides, On the front, there is:
the title
name of artist,
and on the back, there is the studio name,
legal information,
a track list,
a warning label (if applicable)
the barcode
The design for the Digipak should work well with the music video we are making. This means we should pay attention to making sure they both match the genre of classic rock; the costumes should be similar, as well as the early 60s style of photography. However, they do not have to be exactly the same.
We will do a photoshoot for our album cover, because this was most common for boy bands of the time. We will also work with peculiar levels and angles to keep the photos interesting and like our inspiration photos.
